Unfortunately, many interested candidates are often discouraged from beginning training because of a public perception of flying as being unsafe.  The public often perceives light aircraft as being only marginally safe from a mechanical standpoint.  Many more accidents are however attributed to pilot error rather than mechanical problems.  Interestingly, many advances have been made in the last several years that greatly enhance pilot safety.

GPS has revolutionized navigation.  IFR GPS has made just about every public airport accessible in cloudy weather.  In the event of an electrical failure in clouds or reduced visibility, a hand held can continue to provide ground speed, heading, bearing, and altitude information to bring the plane and its occupants back to a safe landing.

New weather avoidance technology allows either ground or satellite based emitters to provide aircraft with a ground weather radar image of the area they are flying through.  The image is generally updated every five to ten minutes.  While the technology is not meant to be used to penetrate a line of thunderstorms, it allows a pilot to have vastly improved situational awareness aloft, and allows avoidance of areas of degraded conditions. All 1World Aero & Flight Club's aircraft are equipped with this XM weather uplink technology via their Garmin 496 GPS units.

In recent years there has also been a proliferation of on-line weather briefing services that give pilots a better picture of the weather and that help pilots make better informed go-no go decisions.  Student pilots also benefit from access to rapidly improving home computer flight simulator programs that are very useful for maintaining procedural habits when flying time or money are limited.

The combination of all of the above mentioned technologies make the cockpit a safer place by improving the pilot capabilities.  The effectiveness of these technologies is maximized or limited by the quality of flight instruction.  Countless safety procedures and habits will need to be instilled in training to keep you safe and to give you good aeronautical decision making skills.  The probability of accidents is significantly reduced through proper training and professional instruction, and thereafter by the new pilot's ongoing commitment to flying on a routine basis and to staying proficient.
